Doing Halloween And Harvest On A Budget

It’s a tradition in our home, we go to a fun fall festival market, swim though corn and try to get lost in a corn field maze.  It’s one of the best times of the year, besides winter, spring, and summer of course.  Who am I kidding?!? I don’t discriminate! I am a lover of all seasons!!!

If you have never stepped foot in a pool of corn by the way, you my friend, are missing out! Go!! Get to the Midwest!!! Hurry!!! It’s a blast!!!

Back to harvest and Halloween fun.  We walk around a vast field and decide on our favorite pumpkins to carve.  My favorite are the pumpkin pie pumpkins. That way I can carve into a pumpkin pie later.  The kids and hubby all choose the biggest, roundest pumpkins they can find.

When pumpkin hunting is complete, and we have had our share of fall festivities (or when it just gets too blasted cold because we’ve forgotten that it’s almost winter and don’t bring our coats!) We set off to pick out the costumes that the kids have been talking about for months.

This is the part about Halloween that we dread every year.  The crowded stores, the unkempt changing rooms, the witches laugh that plays overhead whenever the entrance of the store opens for a new customer.  It also never fails that our children decide before hand what they want to be, only to be told at the store that their costume of choice is either not available in their size, or the outfit has sold out completely.  The kind lady will always encourage us to stop by every day because their shipments always change.  Poor girl.  Does she really think I’m going to go through all of this again?  No honey.  I have better things to do than argue with two children about costumes every day.

Our eight year old has changed ideas of what she HAS to be about 10 times – today. She finalizes her decision a few more times before settling on Cat Woman.  This is the first year she has chosen a female superhero/villain to emulate, and I can’t help but question if this is society’s way of pulling at her feminine side, or is she truly wanting to be a female character.  I am thankful that I am raising her to be independent as she looks up at me and gives me the laundry list of other items she may need to complete her outfit.

  1. Belt with a tail
  2. Better ears
  3. Make up
  4. A black candy bag

I love that she knows that the plastic ears that come with the costume look terrible and will need to be replaced.  Maybe her feminine side fashionista is truly starting to blossom?  I already had her list covered!  Belt, I have a perfect one that will work!  Its brothers, so it might actually fit her! Ears and the tail, covered from an old costume of mine that I never had the guts to wear.  The Makeup and black candy bag is what threw me.  The makeup at the costume store was $3.99 for a small tin of black smeary looking face paint.  That’s when a lightbulb went off in my head!!! With spending $30 on this “Costume” why am I spending such a blasted amount here!!! I got on my phone and checked Amazon.  Nice!!! they had the sizes we were looking for, and the dollar store could cover the accessories.  I had her put down the unnecessary items and told her I got this covered.

You see, I love saving money.  I think most normal people do as well.  Well, when we were in the dollar store last time, there was a plethora of ghoul and ghosts and goblin material to be purchased.  For those of you who have girls who are the princess and fairy lovers, they have you covered too.  The kids were even entertained by a rubber rat that they wanted to bring home to ‘share’ with dad.  I declined, knowing that “To scare dad” meant “let’s really freak mom out!!!”

All of us were in heaven with four rows of nothing but dollar store Halloween items that are only $1.00!!! After figuring out what we truly needed for this costume of hers, we splurged! I mean, including candy for the neighborhood kids and baggies for friends and family, we spent a whopping $12 at this place!!!

My sons costume was a little more complicated to be dollar store material.  He is going to be a black shadow this year.  Amazon thankfully understands and has his costume, but to be perfectly honest, I don’t understand what being a shadow has anything to do with Halloween. If any reader has insight on this, please, comment below, reach out to me, unconfuse me… please.

It was nice knowing that I spent less than $7.00 on at least one child’s costume however, and was able to save on the other one.  I have that to satisfy my need for savings for this week.  I wish you all a safe and happy Halloween this year.  May your costumes be inexpensive, and your candy be plentiful.

P.S. I will post pics of the costumes on Halloween 🙂
